I first discovered these wonderful retro style refrigerators from Smeg on Pinterest, and have been collecting pictures of them ever since. Now that I am looking to replace some appliances in my house, I found myself going through these images again. They are the perfect blend of both worlds— modern technology in a retro design. I have to admit that they are not the most sensible purchase, considering their compact size (look at what they look like from the inside here and here) and steep price, but I like to believe that one day I will have one in my kitchen anyway. I mean life is too short to not make a few impractical purchases every now and then, right?
My home aesthetic sense is modern and minimalist, but I do love a little infusion of color. These refrigerators, though vintage looking, fit in beautifully with modern decor as well, and are a great way to brighten up your space.

Smeg’s 50’s retro style collection also includes washing machines and dishwashers that come in equally cute colors. Something about them reminds me of those toy kitchen and bathroom sets we used to play with as children!

My other favorite manufacturers that deal in retro style household appliances are Gorenje and Big Chill. Gorenje’s retro collection only contains refrigerators, but they come in very exciting colors like lime green, metallic bordeaux, juicy orange, and, my personal favorite, Raspberry Pink. Even the champagne color is glossy and elegant and looks a class apart from your standard refrigerator.
Big Chill, on the other hand, has quite an elaborate range of retro style appliances that includes refrigerators, dishwashers, cooking range, ovens, and vent hoods. I love their microwave ovens with leg stands. So adorable!

I think these appliances are totally worth the splurge. But then I have a super low threshold for resisting the cute! 😉
