“Go for long walks, indulge in hot baths, question your assumptions, be kind to yourself, live for the moment, loosen up, scream, curse the world, count your blessings, just let go, just be.” — Carol Shields

How is it like to have a boyfriend and still be single on Valentine’s Day? Well, I’m not going to lie – it bites! But considering the fact that I’ve either been single or in an LDR (being a diplomat’s daughter isn’t always a bed of roses!) on Valentine’s Day for most of my life, I have learned to have fun on this day without any kind of stereotypical expectations. Now don’t get me wrong, I love me some candlelight, roses, and champagne, but it’s perfectly possible to enjoy this day without them as well. Like back in high school, my friends and I used to make an extra effort to dress up on V-day (let those “boys” know what they’re missing ;-) ) and then strut around in pride with the word “Independent” written across our arms. It was inspired from this song, which was what like the single girl’s anthem of the time? You’ve got to love how everything was so much more dramatic in high school! :P

In college, v-day was all about traditions like indulging in Nirula’s hot chocolate fudge, playing the guitar / singing songs in the college lawns, and throwing an exclusive get-together just for us single girls where we ate and danced until the wee hours of the night. And of course I’m super lucky to have my adorable parents and my dearest/bestest friend @nitzyk who have always mega-pampered me on this day with flowers, chocolates, and whatever the hell else that puts a smile on my face!

None of these memories involve my boyfriend, but I cherish them nevertheless. It’s kind of sad when people make Valentine’s Day just about couples. It’s so much more than that. It’s a day to celebrate love as a whole – love for yourself, for your family, for your friends, for your puppy… Being single shouldn’t be the end all and definitely shouldn’t stop you from being happy and celebrating all the other loves of your life.

That said, I plan to start my Valentine’s Day by showing my body some love. Can you believe I haven’t even worked out once since the year started? :O Tsk Tsk!

Wish you all a super-duper happy Valentine’s Day. Heart you guys! :)
