First of all, thanks to all of you who wished me on my birthday! It especially means a lot when people remember, despite not getting a Facebook reminder for it. Thank you so much for taking the time out to mail or call me. It felt really special. :-)

Secondly, I got a mail from Niraj today, a silent but regular reader of my blog, asking me to do a “birthday special” post on how my life has been the past 25 years. I thought it was a fab idea, especially because I don’t put pictures on this blog and most of you don’t really know me too well!

So here it is — 25 Years of being me:

» On June 10th, 1986, I turned 1 year old and sang (babbled, actually!) myself a happy birthday. Many predicted I would be a singer! ;-)

» My love affair with Bollywood movies began when I was 2 years old. My favorite movie was Jhoothi (don’t even ask me why!). I insisted on watching it every single day and apparently laughed like a maniac every time.

» When I was 3 years old, my parents gave me the greatest gift of all – my little sister. My bestest friend and at times, my greatest enemy. Love her to death!

» I was the main lead in a school play when I was 4 years old. I played a butterfly and felt super special because I got to wear a red costume, while all other kids wore pink, yellow, or blue. Now who doesn’t love standing out? ;)

» When I was 5 years old, I had a super vivid imagination and believed that if you roll aluminum foil into little balls and soak it in water overnight, it would turn into stud earrings. When I wouldn’t find it the next day (my mom would trash it while cleaning) I would convince myself that a thief came into my house and stole my jewelry. :-D

» I made a phone call to Santa when I was 6 years old and asked him to get me children’s makeup set and toy dishes for Christmas. When I got a bicycle instead, I was upset that Santa didn’t listen to me. I also wondered why Santa’s handwriting was so much like my mom’s! ;)

» When I was 7 years old, I was obsessed with fairy tales and read no other genre. I read them and reread them and then read them again. I can totally still read them, actually!

» I got my very first Barbie when I turned 8 years old. She was tanned, wore a gold bikini and came with a lipstick that I could use too. I showed her off the whole day!

» When I was 9 years old, I convinced my sister and her friends that if you plant pearls in the ground, you could grow your very own pearl tree. Poor things, they came and watered it every day! ;-)

» I met Shalini when I was 10 years old. Together, we tried to make paranthas, learned Chinese and fooled people into believing we were magicians. It’s been 15 years since then and we are still BFFs. Love you, Shalu! (Hey, that rhymes!)

» When I was 11 years old, I got braces to close my signature gap teeth. I hated them in the beginning, but realized soon enough that braces were the cool thing at the time. Everyone wanted them!

» Men, sex, and period were the only three things I (and my friends), wanted to talk about at 12 years old. What happened when we were done talking about all three? We started over. Duh!

» I got asked out for the very first time when I was 13 years old. I liked him but was too shy to say yes, so said no. Let’s just call it a very awkward teenage phase!

» When I was 14 years old, all I really wanted to do was get into Bacchus, one of the hottest bars in Panama, located just a street away from my house.

» I got to see snowfall for the first time when I was 15 years old. I remember I was just getting off my flight to Turkey and snowflakes started falling on me. What a nice way to be greeted into a new country, don’t you think?

» I got into a relationship (my very first one!) with a Taiwanese American when I was 16 years old. He held my books, got me stuffed animals and made me turkey sandwiches for lunch. And did I mention he was always MVP of our school’s basketball team? Score! :-P

» When I was 17 years old, I moved to India for college and met Nitin in my U-special bus. He arbitrarily told me that he wanted to have a cottage by a pond and I freaked out because that was my dream! It was best friends at first sight!

» I lost a lot of weight when I was 18 years old and was super excited that I could finally fit into my sister’s clothes. It didn’t last very long though. Stupid college food!

» At 19 years old, I was irregular with class attendance and a regular on the short attendance list. You could find me either a) sleeping or b) sunbathing at the college lawns!

» I randomly got appendicitis when I was 20 years old and had to get my appendix taken out. My boyfriend always jokes with me about asking for dowry since I have a body part missing. ;-) Oh and I absolutely love my scar!

» When I was 21 years old, I convinced my entire graduate class to skip school and take a trip to Jaipur for a few days. It was one of the best trips of my life! And we all got in major trouble later. Oops!

» I got my first job when I was 22 years old and met my boyfriend there. He was really mean to me, but liked my shoes and for some godforsaken reason, called me Barbie! How I despised him for it!

» When I was 23 years old my friends and family worried that I had turned into a workaholic. Work does seem more interesting when you get to be with your boyfriend. :-P

» My boyfriend gave me the brilliant idea of starting a blog when I was 24 years old and since then I love how I’ve been christened Splurgerina. I also love my nicknames splurgy (via Dipti) and splurgu (via Binesh)! Cute, eh?

» And finally, a birthday wish for my 25th year – I wish that my family stays happy and healthy and also hope to reunite with my idiotic boyfriend this year. Enough of this LDR shit!

Love,

SK
