Golden Globes 2013: Eye-catching Details

January 16, 2013

There was so much eye candy on the red carpet this year that one post was simply not enough. Even though some of these celebrities weren’t on my best-dressed list, striking details like hair and makeup and the way they accessorized their outfits deserved a mention. Take a look!

All Images Via Zimbio.com

Cutouts and studs that brought a hint of toughness to Emily Blunt’s otherwise feminine Michael Kors’ lace dress.

Alyssa Milano’s Thalé Blanc Adrianne clutch that featured a gold cheetah encrusted with Swarovski crystals.

Debra Messing’s diamond studded Victorian style bangles from Amrapali. Loved the stacking and mixing of both round and square ones.

Julianne Hough’s Salvatore Ferragamo Melina Clutch in a deep purple with matching nails.

While most celebs accessorized with diamonds and other precious stones, Zooey Deschanel stood out in her classic pearls from Kwiat.

Nicole Richie’s House of Harlow 1960 Jude Snake clutch with a gunmetal fringe that offered an edgy twist and offset her floral Naeem Khan gown.

Julianne Moore’s Tom Ford dress didn’t particularly sweep me off my feet, but its open back with a delicate tie along with finishing touches like her Bulgari chandelier earrings, diamond and emerald Serpenti bracelet-watch, and Tom Ford black nappa panama weave clutch with gold metal added up to SPECTACULAR.

More coming up!

Favorite Looks from Golden Globe Awards 2013

January 15, 2013

This year’s red carpet appearances were anything but predictable; a lot of celebrities took fashion risks, which made for an interesting watch. Award season is always a fun time because it makes me aware of styles that I’ve subconsciously been feeling all this while but would never realize, if it weren’t for the scrutiny that goes with creating these annual best-dressed lists. This year, for the most part, I’ve been veering towards structured dresses instead of ball gowns, and non-fussy hair/makeup instead of a more glamorous look.

Here are some of my favorites of the night:

All Images Via Look.co.uk

Emily Blunt

If I had to pick one favorite, she’d be it! Emily Blunt looked breathtaking in her Michael Kors lace frock with cutouts. This look is a lot more daring than her usual red carpet appearances, and I think it worked phenomenally. A sleek updo complemented her look and her pink Lorraine Schwartz jewels offered a subtle, yet much-needed break from all that gold. She looked flawless!

Claire Danes

Let me start off by saying that I didn’t particularly like her makeup and although her hair looked nice, I prefer softer hairdos with halter necklines. Her earrings were barely visible behind all that hair! But I’m just so in love with that color on her that I couldn’t help but put her down as a favorite. Her Atelier Versace dress was beyond gorgeous and the wrap effect especially flattered her figure.

Kate Hudson

She looked extremely elegant in her belted black Alexander McQueen gown with a keyhole neckline. I like that she kept her hair and makeup simple, letting the McQueen dress shine on its own. I do wish, however, that her hair didn’t cover up the elaborate work on the collar. Nevertheless, it can’t be debated that she did look pretty darn good.

Kerry Washington

Her bejeweled semisheer Miu Miu dress was gorgeous without a doubt, but what took her look to the next level was the hair and makeup. Her choppy bangs, which I’m not normally a fan of, added a certain je ne sais quoi to her appearance and her shimmering purple eyeshadow simply popped against her nude dress and just blew me away!

Lucy Liu

This was such a tricky dress to wear on the red carpet and everyone’s opinion of it will vary, but I think Lucy Liu pulled it off and looked super adorable. Her floral-print Carolina Herrera dress featured pockets and a short train, which I thought photographed rather well! Also, her fishtail braid was an excellent idea considering everyone else either wore their hair down or in an updo, and personally, I can’t think of a hairstyle that would have looked better with this dress.

Katharine McPhee

Not one to easily like an all-black look, especially on the red carpet, I overlooked her initially. But the more I looked at her pictures, the more I started to like this particular look. Katharine wore a black satin dress by Theyskens’ Theory, which featured a plunging neckline and a high front slit that took the look from boring to sensational! I loved that she opted for a high, slightly messy bun that further accentuated her neck.

Marion Cotillard

She was easily my second favorite of the night! Because of the length, I found this asymmetrical Christian Dior dress to be an extremely refreshing choice for the red carpet. The tangerine hue looked fab on her, and since it was meant to be the prime focus, she accessorized lightly with a Chopard bracelet and a Christian Louboutin leopard print clutch that offset the dress perfectly. Barely-there makeup that just played up her eyes and sleek, straight hair parted down the middle highlighted her natural beauty. The only thing I disliked about this look were the extra-pointy pumps; everything else fell together quite nicely.

More red carpet posts coming up, so stay tuned!

Kisses,

SK

Hits & Misses at Met Gala 2011

HITS

L to R : Liv Tyler, Gisele Bundchen, Diane Kruger, Dianna Agron, Zoe Saldana, Doutzen Kroes

My top favorites from the Met Gala this year have to be Liv Tyler, Gisele Bundchen, and Diane Kruger.

Liv Tyler looked incredible in her feathered Givenchy Couture gown and I loved that her hair and makeup were quite simple. I always feel that Givenchy is a little hard to pull off, so kudos to Liv for making it look so effortless.

Gisele Bundchen was one of the few people who wore McQueen last night, and as expected from a McQueen piece (and also just by virtue of being Gisele), she sure did stand out. Just like Liv, she kept hair and makeup minimal and let the dress do all the talking. Perfect ten!

Diane Kruger, without a doubt, also managed to outshine the rest in her Jason Wu dress with a super high slit. As if the dress wasn’t enough, she looked even more glamorous with red lips and wavy hairstyle.

Apart from the three above, I also liked Dianna Agron, Zoe Saldana, and Doutzen Kroes.

Dianna Agron in Michael Kors reminded me a lot of Jennifer Lawrence from Oscars, and although many liked that look of Jennifer’s, I thought it was a little too simple for Oscars. Dianna’s look worked, however, probably because the neckline was more dramatic than Jennifer’s Calvin Klein dress, and her hair and makeup just made her look more polished.

Zoe Saldana, in Calvin Klein, just had me at the color. A very minimalist appearance, but the color made her look so radiant!

Last but not the least, Doutzen Kroes, who looked very beautiful in her red Giambattista Valli gown, a slightly messy bun, and natural makeup. It’s hard to imagine how adorable her baby must be considering she herself is cute as a button! Love her pose too; it’s so “tadaaaaa…here I am!” 😛

MISSES

Individually, I can’t find a single thing wrong with Chanel Iman’s look — loved her Dolce & Gabbana lace dress, spiked Christian Louboutin pumps and red lips — but as a whole she looks way too skinny. Maybe a shorter length would have been more flattering?

Rihanna’s Stella McCartney lace dress worked in my opinion (her attitude is enough to make most of the craziness that she wears look good!) but her hair and makeup could have been softer.

I was also disappointed with JLo in Gucci, particularly because I always expect jaw-dropping, diva-esque looks from her (her Zuhair Murad dress from last year was perfect!). I’m not too fond of that silhouette on her, and also that floral detail around the shoulders is really distracting!

And of course the ladies in Chanel— Blake Lively and Freida Pinto. I quite liked Blake‘s sari/Grecian inspired dress, but I felt that she looked a little washed out. What do you think? As for Freida, lovely hair and makeup but really, what was going on with that dress? :S

Who were your favorites from the Met Gala this year?

xoxo,

SK
