Runway Chic For Cheap: Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2011

May 7, 2011

Blogging about whites during the summer is just about as cliché as it can get, but ever since the first time I laid my eyes on the Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2011 collection, I knew I would have to succumb to this cliché come summer. It has to be, without a doubt, one of my favorite spring/summer collections this year, and as evident by numerous magazine covers and celebrity sightings (see Anne Hathaway, Diane Kruger, Chanel Iman, and more recently our darling RiRi), it is quite popular.

I’m particularly attracted to monochromatic, minimalist looks these days— probably an aftermath of too much talk and fuss over color blocking the past few months— and this collection serves as perfection inspiration. I absolutely love the crisp whites in breezy fabrics, scalloped and eyelet detailing combined with antique lace and crochet, and the seductive, sheer-like quality of the clothes that bring about a very boudoir feel. It just doesn’t get more feminine than this!

So, while the bad part is that not many of us can afford Dolce & Gabbana, the good news is that there are many affordable Dolce & Gabbana inspired clothing available in stores right now. Check out a few pieces that I liked for under $150…

In Numerical Order: Willow & Clay Lace Maxi Dress, Guess Marilyn Corset Top, Guess Meg Romper, BCBGMAXAZRIA Gored Lace Skirt, Topshop Ivory Cutwork Hem Detail Shorts, Modcloth letters home dress, Topshop White Broderie Anglaise Layered Peter Pan Sleeveless Top, Guess rachel skirt, ModCloth Vintage Acoustic Songbird Top, Oasis Broderie Lace Cami, Bebe Shell Puff Sleeve Peasant Top, River Island Short Sleeve Dress With Lace Insert

For the day, wear these pieces with delicate, barely there gold jewelry and natural hair and makeup (here’s a how to). Choose a crossbody bag or a satchel and footwear like wedges, platforms, and espadrilles in neutral colors. In the evening, snakeskin-embossed stilettos/clutch and a red lip would look so luxe! It’s such a comfortable and low maintenance look, and yet incredibly stylish— everything you could want from summer dressing!

Stay stylish,

SK

Hits & Misses at Met Gala 2011

HITS

L to R : Liv Tyler, Gisele Bundchen, Diane Kruger, Dianna Agron, Zoe Saldana, Doutzen Kroes

My top favorites from the Met Gala this year have to be Liv Tyler, Gisele Bundchen, and Diane Kruger.

Liv Tyler looked incredible in her feathered Givenchy Couture gown and I loved that her hair and makeup were quite simple. I always feel that Givenchy is a little hard to pull off, so kudos to Liv for making it look so effortless.

Gisele Bundchen was one of the few people who wore McQueen last night, and as expected from a McQueen piece (and also just by virtue of being Gisele), she sure did stand out. Just like Liv, she kept hair and makeup minimal and let the dress do all the talking. Perfect ten!

Diane Kruger, without a doubt, also managed to outshine the rest in her Jason Wu dress with a super high slit. As if the dress wasn’t enough, she looked even more glamorous with red lips and wavy hairstyle.

Apart from the three above, I also liked Dianna Agron, Zoe Saldana, and Doutzen Kroes.

Dianna Agron in Michael Kors reminded me a lot of Jennifer Lawrence from Oscars, and although many liked that look of Jennifer’s, I thought it was a little too simple for Oscars. Dianna’s look worked, however, probably because the neckline was more dramatic than Jennifer’s Calvin Klein dress, and her hair and makeup just made her look more polished.

Zoe Saldana, in Calvin Klein, just had me at the color. A very minimalist appearance, but the color made her look so radiant!

Last but not the least, Doutzen Kroes, who looked very beautiful in her red Giambattista Valli gown, a slightly messy bun, and natural makeup. It’s hard to imagine how adorable her baby must be considering she herself is cute as a button! Love her pose too; it’s so “tadaaaaa…here I am!” 😛

MISSES

Individually, I can’t find a single thing wrong with Chanel Iman’s look — loved her Dolce & Gabbana lace dress, spiked Christian Louboutin pumps and red lips — but as a whole she looks way too skinny. Maybe a shorter length would have been more flattering?

Rihanna’s Stella McCartney lace dress worked in my opinion (her attitude is enough to make most of the craziness that she wears look good!) but her hair and makeup could have been softer.

I was also disappointed with JLo in Gucci, particularly because I always expect jaw-dropping, diva-esque looks from her (her Zuhair Murad dress from last year was perfect!). I’m not too fond of that silhouette on her, and also that floral detail around the shoulders is really distracting!

And of course the ladies in Chanel— Blake Lively and Freida Pinto. I quite liked Blake‘s sari/Grecian inspired dress, but I felt that she looked a little washed out. What do you think? As for Freida, lovely hair and makeup but really, what was going on with that dress? :S

Who were your favorites from the Met Gala this year?

xoxo,

SK

Favorite Looks of the Week

July 17, 2011

WHO, WHAT, WHERE: Blake Lively in a sheer grey Marchesa gown at the BAFTA “Brits To Watch” event in LA & Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in a white lace Dolce & Gabbana dress while promoting Transformers: Dark of the Moon in Shanghai.

WHY: It’s the brink of summer and nothing says HOT quite like summer neutrals, crisp cottons and breezy chiffon fabrics. I decided to club Blake and Rosie together because they both donned neutrals from head to toe and went for a similar laid-back approach to hair and makeup. Blake Lively looked like a Grecian goddess and for once I even like her hair (catch a close-up here!), which is mostly where I tend to disagree with her. I would have gone for a darker lip color (something like Rosie’s), but that’s again just my tendency to add a little bit of color to everything!

As for Rosie, I think I’ve obsessed with the Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2011 collection enough times for you to know why this would be a favorite! The sheer lace panel on the dress is simply gorgeous, and I love how she didn’t overthink the outfit and went for simple pointed toe pumps. I always feel that pointed toe styles look the chicest paired with mid-length skirts and dresses. Adore her side swept hair too. She’s such a stunner and completely flawless!

Have a preference among the two?

Kisses,

SK
