From all the military overload this season – lace-up boots, jackets, cargo pants, and oodles and oodles of army green – I’ve been the most excited about donning the long, double breasted military coat. It’s right on trend, but at the same time it can be timeless and chic, which is why it makes for a great investment piece! I like the longer versions so much more than the waist length ones because I feel that they are sleek and feminine, and with a killer pair of heels you can really give off that hot, mysterious vibe.
When it comes to outerwear, I don’t think anyone quite does it like Burberry; we are still not over these from last season, and they already have us drooling over their military coats. I love how feminine elements like belted/fitted waists and tulle trim balance out the strong shoulder pads, brass buttons and military tailoring. Coming to Balmain, I have no words to express how exquisite their version of this coat is. Military Coat + Brocade = Pure Genius!!
A long military coat can be extremely versatile and it has numerous styling possibilities. Pair it with cropped tailored trousers, a feminine blouse, and some pointy toe heels for work or throw it over your skirts/dresses, tights, and ankle/over the knee boots for a casual day around town. I also love to play with textures and pair my coat with some chunky knits, in the form of gloves, hats, and sweaters. However you choose to wear it, just remember the key to making your look appear extremely luxe is to pair it with girly elements; think ruffles, lace, tulle, feathered etc. Pick accessories like a delicate cascading necklace or a rhinestone headband to soften the look up.
If you’re shelling out a lot of cash for this coat make sure you choose something understated, preferably in black, so that it’s not only timeless but also easy to match. If you already have too many black coats in your closet, however, than olive, navy, or camel are the way to go. My sister was wearing one in cranberry the other day and it looked sooo good that I just couldn’t stop myself from complimenting her the whole day!! Here are a few more I’ve got my eyes on. Take a peek:

In Numerical Order: Laundry by Shelli Segal Double-Breasted Belted Trench Coat, GUESS Belted Military Coat, BCBG double-breasted Trench Coat, ModCloth Spiced Wine Coat, Bebe Brocade Military Coat, GUESS Coat Military Zip Pockets, Zara Military Style Velveteen Coat
See anything you like? If you’re into Balmain’s brocade one than the Bebe one above is a great alternative and if you like the ones over at MaxMara, the BCBG one featured above is a similar style at a significantly lesser price. And if you’re into classic black, Guess has a lot of nice designs you can check out.
With temperatures dropping drastically the coming months, this is just the coat you’ll need to keep you warm, yet very stylish. Don’t you just love it when comfort and fashion go hand in hand? 🙂
Until next time then, stay warm!
