Sprucing Up the 1950s Ladylike Style for Now!

January 12, 2011

Clockwise: Rachel Roy Spring 2011, Chloe Spring 2011, Vena Cava Spring 2011, Derek Lam Spring 2011

I’ve been obsessed with mid-length, flared skirts and dresses ever since I first set my eyes on this, and now that spring is just a few months away, I think now is the time to really embrace this trend. It is a tricky length to pull off and can often look dowdy and granny-ish, but if styled correctly, nothing is quite as feminine and ladylike.

In order to avoid looking like you have time traveled all the way from the 50s and make the look relevant today, I like to incorporate a few modern touches. A fitted leather jacket or blazer balances the retro vibe of a full, mid-length skirt, while a basic casual tee gives it a more carefree twist. Picking something in unexpected fabrics like sheer and leather is also a fun way to make the look more current.

Wear edgy shoes and boots like Jessica Alba here and Alexa Chung here, or if you want to stick to being feminine (as is the case with me), choose platform sandals or pointed pumps with ankle straps and a stiletto heel (avoid kitten heels). If your skirt or dress comes in a bohemian pattern, wedges work too! Keep things retro with cat eye sunglasses, winged eyeliner, and red lips, but choose a more modern hairdo. I am totally inspired by the messy topknot look at the Rebecca Taylor Spring 2011 show and how it looks paired with such feminine skirts. Cute, isn’t it? And as for accessories, I like to keep it at a minimal with a belt cinched at the waist and a mini cross-body bag or an edgy clutch.

That said, I leave you with a few mid-length skirt and dress options online. Take a look! And if you live in India by any chance, make sure you check out all the local markets. I bought mine from a little shop in Karol Bagh for Rs.400 (around nine dollars!) and was totally taken aback with how good the quality and fit was. A TOTAL bargain – seriously, I love my country!! πŸ˜€

In Numerical Order: ASOS Smudge Flower Print Prom Dress, Anthropologie De Chelly Dress, Topshop Tan 50’s Border Print Dress, ASOS WHITE Leather Midi Skirt, Topshop Bright Blue Pleated Midi Skirt, Mango Silk Paisley Midi Dress, Zara Leather Skirt with Pockets, Whistles Gaby Print Skirt

xoxo,

SK

Since I am a little short, not sure if I can pull this length off:-( will have to experiment a lot to hit the right proportions..I love the Anthropologie dress.
