New York weather has been very unpredictable of late, or as many people like to call it — it’s been bipolar! On some days, it’s hot as hell and on others, it’s raining and there are thunderstorms. The humidity causes my hair to become unruly and twice its size, so I definitely don’t leave it down a lot these days. My go-to, humidity-proof hairstyle this season, besides the side braid of course, has been the high/topknot bun.

Clockwise: Bottega Veneta Spring 2010, Yves Saint Laurent Spring 2010, Lanvin Spring 2010, Luella Spring 2010
I don’t usually like buns; something about them reminds me of beauty pageants and proms. The high bun, however, is growing on me. It takes just a few minutes, is super easy to do, and instantly takes your bad hair blues away! I usually just tie my hair in a really high ponytail, twist it around in a circle on top of my head, pin the ends with bobby pins and top it off with a headband. It looks like the kind on the Bottega Veneta Spring/Summer 2010 runway (also shown above); messy, undone and I don’t even have to tame my flyaways! It’s perfect for a casual day look. For the night, (and I haven’t tried this yet) I would possibly braid the ponytail before tying it in a bun or make a neat one a la Ashley Greene (shown below). On an aside, how cute does it look on her?!?!
Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker and Whitney Port have also been channeling Lanvin’s Spring/Summer 2010 runway, with a tightly tied ponytail that is teased until the hair is big and puffy before it’s tied into a bun. I have to admit, I’m not really into this kind! And there is the other kind shown over at Marc Jacobs’ Spring/Summer 2010, which, honestly, is so tight that just looking at it gives me a headache. Oh and for some reason it always reminds me of Ram’s hair from the old Ramayana series!
Anyway, the point is that I’ve mostly been obsessed with the loose, effortless ones, featured below.
Like all updos, this style brings all the attention to your face, neck and collar bones. So, remember to enhance those cheekbones with a little blush, do up your eyes or your lips and go for a pair of statement earrings or a necklace.
It’s a cute, fun, playful updo that every girl should try out, so if you haven’t tried it out yet, give it a shot; you might just like what you see! And don’t forget to come back here and tell me how it went.
Love,
SK
P.S. – Go check out the über stylish Denni from Chicmuse. She totally rocks this trend!

So the only thing with this is shape of one’s face. It does not suit all shapes sadly ! One problem that I face is that the bun/jooda
never looks tidy coz i use that rubber band to tie it. It looks so messy
that i change my mind about it !!! aaaaaaaaaa….

This reminds me of some ancient movies where Gaaon Ki Goris go out to a Panghat for a collective Snaan and to fill their Gagarias with the same kinda hairstyle, with white or light colored cloth, sarcastically they called it extended chunaria, draped around the body to arouse the interests of some Nukkad ka Gunda or Makhan chor Krishna to maintain the curiosity of the script!! The rest story is history.
The best part was that hairstyle suited to every Gori in those movies and its still in so much demand.
Ya, I always endorse trying out new things.
cheers..

Yeah, I love the style too. But sadly it doesn’t suit me one bit…I tend to look as if the life as been sucked out of me…hehe..
But yeah, the style is pretty awesome!

I have been donning the bun since quite sometime now just because its been rainy and humid and messes my starightening up and leaves me with no other option! I love updos though–the messy ones. Not the tight ones which make me look like a hunter-waali. Need elegance and not boissism coming out of the bun so you know!

the bows are super cute..i don’t think a high bun will suit my face..but may be i could use that yellow bow in some different way
how was your weekend? i went to LA and got back yesterday only..it was fun..

Well this style is a saving in disguise in the humid temperatures of delhi….But sadly it doesn’t suit all face types….specially if you happen to have a round or little chubby one…..otherwise this style is best when it comes to saving yourself from hair troubles

Hey! I am totally on board with this trend… Incidentally I was donning this today itself. But my reason was more ‘hurry’ than ‘fashionable’
You might catch it in one of my coming posts! But I love high buns in daily life. I hate hair hanging by my neck in the Texas heat!

this post reminded me of the 80′s.when i was young ,during summer i used to tie my hair in a bun..sometimes even two. It’s a big relief during the summer..love your blog!

I love high buns on the runway and red carpet. But they somehow do not translate great on my face. I guess it all depends on the bone structure of your face!

I need to try this out! I don’t know if it would suit me though…

love your blog SK!! Reminds me of my long hair & a bun I use to make specially in this HOT weather !! Chopped my hair little too short now !!

@Swati: Yeah you have really long hair from whatever I’ve seen from pics which can be hard to pin up! I have a similar problem cuz my hair is really thick..i use a rubber band a lot of times to tie it too and then pin the loose pieces to make it neater.
@Shantanu: HILARIOUS! It’s always fun to get a guy’s perspective on women’s fashion stuff!
@Dipti: I’m the complete opposite! I like my hair untied when I have a headache.
@Pavitra: Updos in general or just the high bun?
@Tamanna: Yup those are exactly the ones I like as well..the tight ones do look really funny..not to mention uncomfortable!
@Sovina: I love the bows! and what are you talking about..I’m sure you’ll look great..try it out!
@ Scribbling Gal: Ohh..Delhi humidity is horrible for hair! I’m going there next month and I already know my hair is going to be in a bun all the time!
@Tanvi: Yeah that’s what attracted me towards this trend in the first place…the heat and the weather..and then I realized it actually looks pretty good!
Loved the bun on you!
@Ruchika: two buns that’s soooo cute! We used to do that back in school A LOT! Two buns and pigtails!
@Noble beeyotch: the loose, messy kinds suits many though!
@ Leia: Thanks for visiting my blog
And you should definitely try it out…I think it will look really cute on you..you’ve got great cheeks!
@ Persis: Yes..and don’t we all love accessorizing!
@ Kajal: Thank you
The high bun looked really cute on you too!
