My Experience With Rica Waxing

December 21, 2013

rica wax

About a month ago, I went to the beauty salon with my friend to get a wax, and she seriously freaked out looking at my arms after it was done. She said my skin looked diseased and in a state of panic, she started screaming at the staff to go get me some ice. I, obviously, found the whole thing to be extremely amusing and hilarious, because this happens to me all the time. In the states, the waxing ladies often worried that I was going to sue them for making my arms so red! In all fairness though, the redness does go away in 1-2 hours and it doesn’t itch or bother me in anyway, so by now I have just made peace with it.

The beautician at the salon, however, suggested that I try Rica wax the next time I come in, so I quickly did a Google search before going in for my next waxing session recently. Apart from regular honey wax and chocolate wax, I hadn’t really tried anything else, so I was curious to give it a shot. According to their website, Rica is a “98% natural, vegetable and plant-based wax” that is free of colophony, a harsh sticky substance, which could be the main culprit behind my red, inflamed skin post waxing.

First, the beautician used Rica’s cotton milk pre-wax gel to clean out the area and make it more receptive to waxing. The wax that she used on me was creamy and milky white in color (they have a wide range of waxes suitable for different skin types) and because it doesn’t need to be heated as long as regular honey wax, it felt gentler on the skin. I found Rica’sΒ  “superior hair gripping strength” claim to be quite true; there was hardly a need to go over the same area multiple times to get rid of stubborn hair. It was a lot messier than regular wax, however, and left a white residue that could only be removed by oil. You might want to take that into consideration if you are going for Rica waxing and have to be somewhere afterwards but don’t really have the time to go home to change or clean up. Also, I can’t really say that it hurt any lesser than other waxes; from all the waxes that I have tried, I think chocolate waxing has been the least painful experience. After the waxing was complete, the beautician applied Rica’s non-greasy after-wax lotion that helped get rid of the wax residue and moisturized the skin.

Overall, I was quite happy with the experience and will be sticking to Rica waxing from now on. This is the first time in years that I haven’t come home to angry-looking skin post a waxing session. I also quite like the gels that are used before and after the waxing; it gives it quite a spa-like feel. If you also have extra-sensitive skin, ask your salon about Rica waxing. And if they don’t offer it, don’t you worry! Nykaa sells a range of Rica products including the pre-wax gel, wax jars and refills, and after-wax lotion, so you can experiment with the products right at the comfort of your home!

Kisses,

SK

      Hi Bhavana,

If you have sensitive skin, Rica wax is better since it’s a natural, plant-based wax. It also pulls out the hair in one go, unlike regular honey wax, so there’s less risk of skin irritation. It’s more expensive than regular wax especially since they also use other Rica products (pre-wax gel and after-wax lotion) on the area.

I’ve been using rica wax for over 2 years now πŸ™‚

          Hi Sidra,

If you are using Rica wax, never try to use water to get rid of the stickiness. There is a Rica after-wax lotion that you are supposed to use, which helps in removing wax residue.

      Hi Kavita,

It’s not procedural to apply ice after rica waxing. Instead of using water to clean wax residue they use an after wax lotion, which also soothes and moisturizes the skin.

      Thanks for your comment.

The wax does need to be heated. I mentioned in the post that it doesn’t need to be heated as long as honey wax. It feels warm on the skin as opposed to the hot honey wax.

      Hope that helps πŸ™‚

      Hi Ayesha,

I believe you can reheat the wax multiple times. The salon where I go for a wax reheats it until the container is finished and I have never experienced a rash or any other irregularities on my skin.

Since the wax is also fairly expensive, I’d suggest that you try using it for a second time and see how your skin is doing. If you see any irritation, then don’t use it again.

Hi Priya, since you seem to have really sensitive skin, it’s best not to experiment and consult a dermatologist who can advise the best kind of hair removal method for your facial skin type.

Personally, I also get redness and bumps on my face after using any kind of wax on it, so I immediately use a natural, cooling face pack after it and continue using it for the next few days. The bumps disappear after a couple of days without leaving any marks.

Because of the redness and bumps, I only do it once every two months and like I said before, I follow it up with applying lots of face packs after it. I currently use Rica face wax http://www.amazon.in/RICA-Brazilian-Wax-Avocado-Butter/dp/B00BH4Y4FA

I haven’t experienced any other side effects besides the redness and bumps. The redness disappears after about an hour and the bumps take about a week to heal.

Hi Sheena, it’s best to consult a cosmetologist or a dermatologist who will be able to better address your skin concerns. I have a similar skin type, and I tried numerous waxes before narrowing it down to rica face wax…it still gives me a little bit of redness and bumps but it’s the one that has suited me the best so far. I apply face packs regularly for a whole week after using it, and I only get it done once every 2-3 months to give my skin some relief.

Hi Kanchan, do the black spots remain or do they go away after some time? Also, do you wax at home? If you are getting it done by a professional and still getting a reaction, maybe Rica isn’t the best wax for you. It’s best to see a dermatologist or talk to your parlor lady about the best wax for your skin type.

      Hi Manisha,

Rica has their own set of wax heaters : http://www.ricawax.com/heaters.php…the single cartridge one is available here: http://www.lovelylifestyle.com/RICA-Single-Cartridge-Refill-Wax-Heater

But quite honestly, any regular wax heater should work just fine. Just keep the following directions in mind for best results:

Place wax can in heater and turn thermostat on maximum setting for a quick melt.
Occasionally stir wax until proper consistency has been reached (just beyond the consistency of honey.)
Turn heater down to normal temperature (70-80 degrees Celsius).
Apply wax after using the pre-wax gel on the area.

Hi Payal, I’m not sure what went wrong…usually coconut oil comes with no side effects. Maybe it has to do with how much you heated the wax? Rica wax needs to be lukewarm and not very hot. If the black spots still remain, it’s best to seek the advice of a dermatologist asap.

N I guess this color difference wud increase every time I wax. Shud I get waxed the whole jaw line n chin too so that I ve uniform comlplexion .?? Actually I know first time u wax the hair grow out thicker so that’s why it’s better to not wax fine hair .

      Hi Priya,

What wax are you using? Waxing is a little harsh for the face, so you should be very careful about what products you are using and how often you do it. I wouldn’t recommend doing it monthly. Do it every other month or even later if possible. Every time you wax make sure you use a cooling pack on your face. You might get bumps but they subside after a few days. Yes, the area you get waxed will generally appear lighter than other areas, so it’s better to get the whole face done. From what I have experienced, the hair doesn’t come out thicker, but I feel it does come out a little darker. That’s just my opinion though, I’m not sure if there is any truth behind it. If you have a lot of hair and you need to wax much more frequently or if it’s affecting your skin, it’s better to consider going in for laser hair removal. It might seem expensive, but in the long run, it’s much better for your skin and you can get rid of the problem once and for all. Kaya skin clinic keeps offering great hair removal packages, so keep an eye out for those.

The beautician said they use nature s or raaga s. One of my friend got laser done on face n she said her skin has become more sensitive to sun n she can’t go in sun without a sunscreen otherwise flakes form on skin. With other people who underwent it I ve talked to. I came to a conclusion that it’s not a very good method. So I am apprehensive about laser. I don’t ve much hair n I need not to wax my upper lips before a month. Since bleached blonde hair just don’t give a nice sight I thought about waxing. Since I ve been waxing my upper lips for a year n I found it much better than threading. Rica I wud nt want to use at home since it requires oil to remove residual wax . Can u suggest me any other good wax.
    Thanking you

      Hi Priya,

Rica wax is the only wax that has been gentle on my skin, so I really do not know what other facial wax you can use. I have talked to my dermatologist about this and they actually don’t recommend waxing the face at all. They said it may sound weird, but the best method to remove facial hair, if you aren’t going in for a laser, is shaving. It’s gentle on the skin and also exfoliates it at the same time, making your skin look softer and fresher. I looked it up and this is indeed a thing: http://www.popsugar.com/beauty/Should-Women-Shave-Face-35580074 // http://www.cosmopolitan.com/style-beauty/beauty/a37022/women-shaving-their-faces/

That being said, I am going to be going for laser hair removal soon and am planning to blog about it, so you can read about my experience — the pros and cons — firsthand πŸ™‚

Hi, I purchased Rica wax online and tried normal wax heater to melt it but as normal heaters do stop at certain temperature so they failed to melt it.Now I don’t know what to do with it.My 900 bucks are simply wasted.i know there are few wax heaters available in the market but they are way too costly. Can you suggest me something?

I had same issue. So I put water to boil in vessel and put the wax container with lid on in that. In 15 minutes it’ll melt

    Hey,

I got one Brazilian wax and one lemon wax for other areas. Both 800g tins. I don’t have a heater and don’t know what to use or how to use it because it can’t be cut into cubes and heated and I’m not sure if I can use any way heater with it. Could you please suggest what I could buy to use them ?
    I’m in Hyderabad, India.

Hi Shwetha, did you buy Rica wax? This heater is especially made for Rica wax: http://www.lovelylifestyle.com/RICA-Waxxo-Wax-Heater?gclid=Cj0KEQjwpNm-BRCJ3rDNmOuKi9IBEiQAlzDJHzPcnUb7vlMohCz_dBe9RFU3-Ullfym70LDHFX0Uh5IaApOO8P8HAQ

There is another wax which is much better than Rica it is called Richelon Wax, Richelon wax leaves the skin feeling smooth, soft and fairer as it removes tanning much better than any other wax.

I would strongly suggest you try Richelon Pro Wax as it spreads beautifully on the skin and not just removes hair but also makes your skin healthy.

I bought aloe vera rica wax.i read the instructions in website and went accordingly as per the directions but the wax sticks to my skin and I’m not able to wax I rather end up remove the wax by using oil.but they use the same product at salon and it dries very quickly and removes even tiny hair when I’m doing the same at home the wax just sticks to my skin and doesn’t work properly.any suggestions?where am I going wrong?

Hi I have bought rica wax recently from amazon . I don’t know how to transfer the wax to my heater and heat it . Does it support the normal heater or do I have to buy a different wax heater for rica ?
