If there’s one thing I can never imagine leaving the house without, it’s got to be a lip balm, and Maybelline’s Baby lips is one that has found a permanent place in my bag now. It’s affordable, has SPF, and keeps my lips moisturized for hours. Until now, I never felt the need to buy another lip balm—until I saw the Baby Lips Candy Wow collection that is! These crayon-shaped lip balms are so cute that you will want to buy them just for their looks! That’s not to say that they aren’t good in terms of quality, but that will hardly matter because you will want them as soon as you lay your eyes on them. The packaging is not only fun but also really convenient thanks to the color-coded covers. I hate having to rummage through all my lipsticks to find the shade that I’m looking, especially when I am running late, so these are really practical that way.
True to their name, the lip balms smell sweet and candy-like and come in five fruity shades—Peach, Orange, Raspberry, Cherry, and Mixed Berry. The colors remind me a lot of that juicy stain you get on your lips after having a lollipop. They are glossy, slightly more pigmented than the Baby Lips Loves Color range, yet subtle enough for a casual, every-day usage. Except for the peach color, which is the lightest, I think the shades are versatile enough to suit all complexions.
The lip crayons are retractable, glide easily, and feel soft and buttery on the lips. The coverage is sort of sheer so you do have apply 2 to 3 coats to build coverage. They have all the good qualities of a lip gloss—light and lustrous, leaving your lips looking nice and plump—but they are not as sticky or runny as a lip gloss. When I’m not in the mood for the shiny look, I just blot the gloss away with a tissue and the balm leaves a beautiful popsicle stain on my lips. It looks perfect and fresh for spring! They keep your lips moisturized for a good 4-5 hours before you have to reapply, while the color tends to fade away faster (around 2-3 hours if you don’t eat/drink anything).
If you were to compare the Candy Wow range with the other products from the Baby Lips collection, you could say that while these are a clear winner as far as pigment is concerned, the Baby Lips chap stick is much more hydrating and for a longer time. You can’t really substitute one for the other, especially if you have dry lips. Also, the chap stick has SPF 20, while Candy Wow is enriched with Vitamin E, so as you can see, they both have their pros and cons. Personally, I like altering between the two throughout the day depending on my needs.
Overall, these lip balms are a must-have to carry around with you for touch-ups or for days when you want to keep your makeup relatively simple. They are also a great gift to give to teenage girls who are just starting to experiment with makeup. For a lip balm, the color intensity is really impressive, and I love all the shades from the collection. This is definitely a product I will keep buying for a long time to come. Good job, Maybelline!
